I think it's what you live for that counts. Effectively, when you think about it, you're "dying" for the things that you fill your life with. So, would you "die" for three hours of TV a night and a bunch of expensive toys in the garage? Or would you "die" for a life filled with giving and caring of friends and family, and work and achievements that are meaningful to you? "What is worth dying for?" is really a question we should ask ourselves every day. Because that thing we decide to spend the day doing (working a job that we hate and resent? or living on much less money so we can work on something important to us, creative work or caring work?) could well be the last thing we ever do.

I would give my life for my kids/grankids (when I get them) in a blink of an eye. Others not so sure but, if I was in a situation where I didn't have time to think about it I would probably give my life for any child. ie you see a car coming towards a person and without thinking you run and push the person out of the way and get hit yourself. That isn't a heroic thing but just animal instincts jumping in to save the next generation I think.

I'd die for my loved ones, though in truth, I guess the harder thing is to live a good life for them, so I could continue bringing them joy and warmth everyday :-)

Q: Would you be responsive enough to act in an instant?

A: I like to think that most people will do something heroic when given the opportunity. The situation suddenly arises and you have a choice of doing nothing or helping. I think most people will jump at the chance to help (me included).

Q: Or have the strength to endure over a longer period of time? Or to fight for something that doesn’t affect you?

A: These are much harder to answer. Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela each fought for a long period of time and fought for others. I think that they indirectly benefited through helping others.

Personally, I don't feel I have a cause per say. I do volunteer and do charity work but nothing resounds so deeply that I would give my life for it.

Perhaps that's a good thing? Perhaps where I live life's good and doesn't require such a big sacrifice. Yeah we have problems, but none so great requiring you to die for it.

Fantastic post Julian, you have a way of getting my brain working!

I would work day and night for my passion. Would I die for my passion? I think that is something that one would have to be place in a moment to find out the true. The true test happen in the second of decision. I know I would give my life for my love ones, but would I do it for a something else? I would have to wait and see.

I guess for me the question is more, "What would I risk my life for." If I fully know the end result of my action is death, that really changes the answer...

I would risk my life for the protection of my immediate family and the security of my country. I would probably risk my life to save someone elses if there is a chance of success.

Ultimately, it is going to depend on the situation and circumstances EVERY time. BUT, to answer the question, Yes, there are things I would risk my life for.

Very interesting question! I guess there are not many people who really know the answer until faced with such a situation. As you, I would like to believe that I'm capable of heroic acts ... but I suspect my self preservation instinct might be pretty strong.

I'm also guessing that those, like Sonny, who die in such an act rarely take the decision to act in the certain knowledge they will die. I guess, if he'd stopped to think about it, he would assume that he'd make it too.
